I'm back! I had enough time to finish "Black Beauty" (1877) by Anna Sewell while on the plane. I have to say that I don't think I've ever read the whole book. We used to have the abridged version for kids. It had pictures. And I've seen 3 movie versions of the story, but the book was better. I found it fascinating that the author wasn't just preaching for animal rights, but she was explaining WHY we treat both animals AND other humans respectfully...because God says so. That's a theme that was somehow missed in all the other versions. Horray for the original!
